Keep Greek alive within our education system

Governments at both State and Federal level are currently reviewing their education curriculum with the aim of establishing a blue print that will serve our children’s learning needs for the next decade.

The review will also include the Governments approach towards the teaching of languages other than English within the school environment. Unfortunately, the teaching of Greek does not seem to be a high priority in their current agenda. We as a community need to show Government that Greek is a language that deserves a place in our education system. It is a language that is alive and widely spoken in the community, thus truly reflecting the multicultural nature of Australian society.

Lobby your local MPs, speak to your school principals and demand that Greek remains a strong vibrant part of our education curriculum.

Here are just a few messages from students of the GOCMV after-hours schools who were honoured with academic excellence awards for achieving a VCE study score over 40 for Modern Greek.

“I think its important not only because of the cultural aspect and because we like to maintain our Greek heritage but also because it does give you a better understanding. I did English language this year, I didn’t do mainstream English and I found that my Greek even helped me with that,” - Angelique Markos

Katiforis and Kallianis echoed her thoughts. “It is very important that Greek Australian students learn Greek not only to learn the language but also to learn more about their culture and their history and what their ancestors have accomplished,” Yianni Kallianis and Yianni Katiforis.
