Behind Closed Doors

Script Reading

Behind every door is a tragedy, a comedy, a romance or all three.  Behind Closed Doors is a triptych of short plays, written and directed by Demetra Giannakopoulos, exploring love, sex and what it means to be a contemporary Greek-Australian family. During this event, audiences will be given the wonderful opportunity of hearing the short plays presented as script reading.

“Silence”

Ari awakens beside his wife, Margarita, just as he has every day of the last 43 years.  Ari kisses her forehead and lingers.  She does not stir.  Margarita is dead.  As he dresses her lifeless body for the funeral director, he uncovers her secret meetings with their estranged son Telly, and his partner John.  In his despair of loss and betrayal Ari must now choose whether to cling to his principles or reconnect with his son.

“Answer Me”

Elly is drifting through her romantic life.  She answers a personals ad from Kosta and Mary, a married couple seeking sexual adventures.  A shared history between Elly and Mary pushes the “anonymous” encounter to power plays and point scoring.  The stakes grow higher when the dalliance rekindles long buried desires, forcing Elly and Mary to rethink their life’s choices.

“Coming In, Coming Out”

Alexandra, Alex.  The beneficiary of a Greek heritage.  Olivia is Alex’s partner.  A Roxy girl.  A “skip” to Alex’s “wog”.  Different backgrounds, same desires.  Olivia and Alex live together but you wouldn’t know.  Alex isn’t “out” so she has built a closet big enough for two-for the sake of family.  Olivia just wants to live the truth.  Alex’s mother has come to visit but a surprise guest and a marriage proposal forces them to decide who is family.
